Busquen el conocimiento espiritual (jñanam) que es el asiento de la dulzura. Desháganse del deseo de disfrutar de los sentidos, el cual, al igual que el placer que obtienen al rascarse un eczema que les pica, sólo empeora la dolencia. No pueden curarla cediendo a la tentación de rascarse. Cuanto más se rascan, más tentados a continuar están, hasta que el sangrado aparece. Por lo tanto, desistan de esa búsqueda vana y concéntrense en asuntos espirituales; o, al menos, muévanse en el mundo con la conciencia siempre presente de que el mundo es una ciénaga, una red, una trampa en la cual el apego y el deseo los precipitarán. Sean verdaderos devotos y vuélvanse tan pequeños que se puedan escabullir fuera de los grilletes de los sentidos, o sean verdaderos sabios (jnanis) y vuélvanse tan inmensos que puedan escapar rompiendo los grilletes. Seek jnanam (spiritual knowledge), which is the seat of sweetness. Get rid of the desire for sense-enjoyment, which like the pleasure you get while scratching itching eczema, only makes the complaint worse. You cannot cure it by yielding to the temptation to scratch. The more you scratch, the more you are tempted to continue, until bleeding intervenes. So desist from that vain pursuit and concentrate on spiritual matters, or at least, move in the world with the ever present consciousness that it is a morass, a net, a trap, into which attachment and desire will precipitate you. Be a true devotee and become so small that you wriggle out of the shackles of the senses or be a true jnani and become so huge, that you escape by breaking the shackles. Dios pide el corazón, todo el corazón y nada más que el corazón. Si el corazón tiene muchas goteras, la dulzura se escurrirá y ustedes no podrán ofrecerle a Dios el corazón completo. El egoísmo, el orgullo, la sed de fama; todos éstos son goteras. Las semillas brotarán sólo cuando están bien enterradas en la tierra, no si están en la superficie. Si donan algo para una buena causa esperando que su nombre aparezca en el periódico, regocijándose cuando lo ven allí y deprimiéndose si no lo encuentran, entonces ese acto de caridad tiene goteras. Ese sacrificio es superficial y egoísta. Karna perdió la vida cuando recordó con desesperación, los sacrificios que había realizado; estos no deben ser contabilizados en la memoria. El regateo y el cálculo son inútiles en el campo espiritual.
No pueden regatear con el Señor y pedir recompensas proporcionales. Si hacen tal cosa lo perderán todo. Él tiene Su propia aritmética. Discurso Divino del 17 de diciembre de 1964.

 

God asks for the heart, the full heart and nothing but the heart. If the heart has many leaks, the sweetness will be drained away and you cannot offer God the full heart. Egoism, pride, thirst for fame – all these are leaks. The seeds will sprout only when they are well within the soil, not when they are on the surface. If you donate something to a good cause, hoping that your name will appear in the newspaper, exulting when it is seen there, dejected when it is not found, then that charity springs a leak. Such sacrifice is superficial and selfish. Karna lost his life when he recalled in despair such sacrifices he had made; they should not be counted in the memory. Bargaining and calculating are useless in the spiritual field. You cannot haggle with the Lord and ask for proportionate rewards. Ask for proportionate reward and you lose all. En realidad, todas las miserias de la humanidad son causadas por la humanidad misma, no por un agente extraño. Teniendo en su poder todos los instrumentos que producen alegría y contento, si el hombre es desgraciado, se debe solamente a su perversidad y a su estupidez. A lo largo de los siglos, se le ha advertido mediante las escrituras en todos los idiomas, que debe renunciar a la codicia y a la lujuria, abandonar el hábito de satisfacer a los sentidos y la creencia de que él es sólo este cuerpo y nada más. Sin embargo, no conoce la enfermedad que lo está torturando. La enfermedad se debe a la “deficiencia de vitaminas”, como dicen; las vitaminas son: sathya, dharma, shanti y prema (verdad, rectitud, paz y amor divino). Tómenlas y se curarán; asimílenlas en su carácter y su conducta, y resplandecerán con buena salud física y mental. Divino Discurso

In reality, all the miseries of mankind is caused by mankind itself, not by any extraneous agency. Having all the instruments of joy and contentment in one’s possession, if man is miserable, it is only due to his perverseness and his stupidity. He has been warned, over centuries, by the scriptures of all languages that he should give up greed and lust, give up the habit of catering to the senses, and give up the belief that he is just this body and nothing more. Yet he does not know the illness that is torturing him. The disease is due to ‘vitamin deficiency,’ as they say; the vitamins are satya, dharma, shanti and prema (truth, righteousness, peace and divine love). Take them and you recover; assimilate them into your character and conduct, and you shine with fine mental and physical health. (Divine Discourse, Dec 16, 1964)

La gente recita el Gita, logra destreza en su exposición, pero no vive de acuerdo a su mensaje. El Gita es interpretado de muchas maneras según los caprichos y fantasías de cada uno. El Gita y otros textos de las escrituras, son como el Kalpavriksha (el árbol que cumple los deseos). Se prestan a varias interpretaciones y significados. Pero lo que importa, no es la interpretación múltiple sino la comprensión derivada de la experiencia real. Sin poner en práctica las enseñanzas del Gita, no podemos derivar la bienaventuranza que se puede obtener de él. Escuchar el Gita o recitarlo interminablemente, no servirá de nada si uno no hace nada por purificar el corazón y librarse de las malas cualidades como el ego, el egoísmo y el orgullo. Es mejor poner en práctica una sola estrofa del Gita que el saber de memoria los 700 versos. Ningún estudio o
práctica espiritual puede ayudar a purificar el propio corazón a menos que uno haga el esfuerzo. Y cuando el corazón es purificado, se vuelve una morada merecedora de lo Divino. Discurso Divino del 28 de septiembre de 1984.

 

People recite the Bhagavad Gita, achieve proficiency in expounding it, but do not live up to the message. The Gita is interpreted in many ways according to each one’s whims and fancies. The Gita and other scriptural texts are like the Kalpavriksha (the Wish-fulfilling Tree). They lend themselves to varied interpretations and meanings. But what matters is not the manifold interpretation, but the understanding derived from actual experience. Without putting into practice the teachings of the Gita, we cannot derive the bliss that can be got from it. Reciting the Gita endlessly or listening to it will be of no avail if nothing is done to purify one’s heart and get rid of evil qualities like ego, selfishness and pride. It is better to put into practice a single stanza of the Gita than to get by heart all the 700 verses. No spiritual study or sadhana can help to purify one’s heart unless one makes the effort. And when the heart is purified, it becomes a
worthy abode for the Divine. (Divine Discourse, Sep 28, 1984)
