El contacto de los sentidos con el objeto despierta el deseo y el apego; esto conduce al esfuerzo y, por consiguiente, a la euforia o a la desesperación. A continuación están el miedo a la pérdida o la pena por el fracaso, y la cadena de reacciones se va alargando. El «observador» no debe apegarse a «lo observado»; este es el secreto para vivir con felicidad. Si hay muchas puertas y ventanas abiertas a todo viento que sople, ¿cómo podría sobrevivir la llama de una lámpara? Una manera de cerrar puertas y ventanas es la completa entrega al Señor (Saranagathi); pues cuando te entregas por completo al Señor, estás desprovisto de «ego», y por lo tanto no estás expuesto a los embates de la alegría o de la pena. Saranagathi te permite aprovechar la gracia del Señor para resolver todas las crisis que surjan en tu vida, y te

The contact of the senses with object arouses desire and attachment; this leads to effort and consequently, either elation or despair! Then, there is the fear of loss or grief at failure and the train of reactions elongates. The ‘see-er’ must not attach oneself to the ‘seen’; that is the secret to live happily. With many doors and windows kept open to all the winds that blow, how can the flame of the lamp within survive? The lamp is your mind, which must burn steadily unaffected by the demands of the world outside. Complete surrender to the Lord (Saranagathi) is one way of closing the windows and doors. For, when you surrender completely to the Lord, you are bereft of ‘ego’ and so, you are not buffeted by joy or grief. Saranagathi, will enable you to draw upon the Lord’s Grace for meeting all the crises that arise in your life and renders you heroic, steadfast and better prepared to face life’s

Como un gatito, que mediante el mero maullido llama a su madre al lugar en que se encuentra, todo lo que tiene que hacer el auténtico devoto es anhelar al Señor. Un simple maullido, con el dolor de la separación, ganará Su corazón. La cosecha que crece en los campos tiene sed de lluvia. Ve las pesadas nubes que navegan por el cielo, pero no puede izarse a esa altura, ni tampoco bajarlas al suelo. También la humanidad se achicharra bajo el sol caliente, el calor insoportable del ego y la codicia. Necesita la lluvia de la gracia; sabe que sólo entonces podrá florecer en paz y alegría. Así como las nubes forman gotas y caen sobre aquellos campos que han escogido favorecer, el Absoluto Sin Forma se individualiza, asume una forma y desciende en medio de la humanidad, para salvar y sustentar. Este es el secreto de Dios (Madhava) descendiendo como hombre (manava). Cuando las lluvias han
llegado, el sol tiene su utilidad. Así también, cuando la gracia del Señor ha sido ganada, el ego y la codicia pueden ser aprovechados, haciendo que fluyan por canales útiles. (Divino Discurso, 25 de enero de 1963)

 

Like the kitten calling the mother to where it sits by merely mewing, all that the true devotee needs to do is just yearn for the Lord! A mere mew with the pain of separation will win His heart. The growing crop in the fields thirsts for rain. It sees the heavy rain clouds sail across the sky, but it cannot rise up to that altitude, nor can it bring the clouds down to the ground. Humanity too sizzles in the hot sun, the unbearable heat of ego and greed. It needs the rain of grace; it knows only then it can flourish in peace and joy. Just as the clouds form droplets and fall upon the fields that they choose to foster, the Formless Absolute individualises Itself, assumes form, and comes down in the midst of humanity to save and sustain. That is the secret of God (Madhava) coming down as man (manava). Once the rains come, the sun has its uses! So too, when the grace of the Lord is gained, ego and greed can be put to profit by being made to flow into
useful channels. (Divine Discourse, Jan 25, 1963)

Tal vez ustedes duden de que palabras tan pequeñas como Rama, Sai o Krishna puedan hacerles atravesar el ilimitado mar de la vida mundana. La gente cruza vastos océanos sobre una diminuta balsa; pueden caminar por oscuras junglas llevando en las manos una pequeña lámpara. El Nombre, incluso el Pranava (Om), que es más pequeño, tiene vastas potencialidades. No es necesario que la balsa sea tan grande como el mar. La recitación del Nombre Divino es como la operación de un trépano para sacar agua del subsuelo; es como los golpes de cincel que liberan la imagen de Dios, aprisionada en el mármol. Rompan el revestimiento, y aparecerá el Señor; hiendan la columna, como Prahlada (devoto del Señor Vishnu) le pidió a su padre que hiciera, y el Señor, que está siempre allí, se manifestará. You may doubt whether such a small word like Rama, Sai or Krishna can take you across the boundless sea of worldly life. People cross vast oceans on a tiny raft; they are able to walk through dark jungles with a tiny lamp in their hands. The Name, even the Pranava (Om) which is smaller, has vast potentialities. The raft need not be as big as the sea. The recitation of the Divine Name is like the operation of a bore well to tap underground water; it is like the chisel-stroke that will release the image of God imprisoned in the marble. Break the encasement and the Lord will appear; cleave the pillar, as Prahlada (Lord Vishnu’s devotee) asked his father to do, and the Lord who is ever there will manifest Himself. Churn and you bring the butter, latent in the milk, into view. (Divine Discourse, Jan 13, 1965)

La práctica: esto es lo que verdaderamente importa en la espiritualidad. La erudición es una carga, y a menudo una desventaja. En tanto se crea que Dios está lejos, en templos y sitios sagrados, ustedes sentirán que la religión es una carga y un obstáculo. Pero plántenlo en su corazón, y se sentirán livianos, sin cargas, y de hecho más fuertes. Es como una canasta de comida: cuando la llevan sobre el hombro, parece pesada y se sienten demasiado débiles incluso para transportarla durante una caminata. Pero síentense junto a un arroyo, y cómanla. Si bien el peso total no ha disminuido, la consecuencia de ingerir el alimento hace que se sientan más livianos, y de hecho más fuertes. De la misma manera, apliquen esto a la idea de Dios. No lo transporten sobre los hombros, ¡llévenlo dentro de sí! ¡Que florezca allí
dentro! Conserven siempre con ustedes el recuerdo del Señor y su gloria. (Divino Discurso, 18 de febrero de 1964)

 

Practice—that is the real thing that matters in spirituality! Scholarship is a burden, it is very often a handicap. So long as God is believed to be far away in temples and holy places, you will feel religion to be a burden and a hurdle. But plant him in your heart and you will feel light, burdenless and in fact, stronger! It is like the food basket – when you carry it on the shoulder, it feels heavy and you feel you are too weak to even carry it during a walk. But sit near a stream and eat it. Though the total weight has not decreased, the consequence of eating the food makes you feel lighter and in fact stronger! Similarly, apply this to the idea of God. Do not carry it on your shoulder, take ‘Him’ in! Let Him blossom within you! Keep the memory of the Lord and His Glory always with you! (Divine Discourse, Feb 18, 1964)
