La vida de cada hijo está en alto grado influenciada por las cualidades de los padres. El cuidado amoroso de la madre Jijabai hizo de Shivaji un gran guerrero. Gandhi se convirtió en un Mahatma por su piadosa madre Putlibai. Putlibai guardaba un voto estricto en el que ella debía esperar el canto del cucú antes de tomar su alimento. Cierto día, esperó por un largo tiempo que el cucú cantara sin tomar ningún alimento. El joven Gandhi no podía soportar ver a su madre ayunando por tanto tiempo. Por consiguiente, fue afuera de la casa e imitó el canto del cucú. Luego entró y dijo: «Madre, toma tu alimento ahora, ya que escuchamos al cucú.» Incapaz de soportar la tristeza porque su hijo mintiera, abofeteó a Gandhi y le gritó: «¡Qué pecado he cometido yo para que me haya nacido un mentiroso!» Gandhi, inmediatamente se arrepintió y

Every child’s life is greatly influenced by parents’ qualities. The loving care of mother Jijabai made Shivaji a great warrior. Gandhi became a Mahatma because of his pious mother Putlibai. Putlibai observed a strict vow wherein she would wait for the cooing of the cuckoo before having food. One day, she waited for a very long time for the cuckoo’s call without taking food. The young Gandhi could not bear to see his mother fasting for such a long time. Hence, he went out of the house and imitated a cuckoo’s coo. Then he came inside and said, «Mother, please take your food now, as we heard the cuckoo.» Unable to contain her grief that her son lied, she slapped Gandhi and cried, «What sin did I commit that a liar should be born to me!» Gandhi immediately repented and prayed for her forgiveness.
